In 1876 King Gojong signed Treaty of Ganghwa, giving Japan excess to 3 ports. In 1885 Port Hamilton was occupied by the British Navy.
1st Sino-Japan War btw Japan & Qing China was fought largely in Korea.Japanese agents assasinated Queen Min in the suspicion that she was seeking Russian help. Qing signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki to officially guarantee Korea's independence from China as it entered Japan's regional hegemony.
Sunjong, the Emperor Yunghui was the second and final emperor of Korea, ruling from 1907 until 1910, his reign ended with the Japan-Korea Anexation Treaty in August 1910
In the Treaty of Portsmouth Russians recognized Japan's dominance in Korea & turned over their leases of Port Arthur, the Liaodong Peninsula & the southern half of Sakhalin Island, to Japan.
The war's highest-ranking American POW, U.S.General William Dean reported that most of the North Korean cities and villages he saw were either rubble or snow-covered wastelands. US Gen Curtis LeMay said "we went over there and fought the war and eventually burned down every town in North Korea anyway, some way or another, and some in South Korea, too."
